What Scenarios Give Michigan the Easiest Path to a National Championship?

Obviously, Michigan needs to win. If they were to lose to Iowa they’re going to need help just to make the playoffs. But let’s assume Michigan can score at least one touchdown on Saturday night and as a result wins the game.

Next, we want Washington and Florida State to win. Either one would be a winnable matchup for Michigan and will likely have to make the playoff if they are 13-0. Then we want to see Alabama win. This scenario would likely knock Georgia out of the playoffs and give Michigan a matchup with Texas if they win the Big 12 or Alabama if Oklahoma State wins the Big 12.

Now, I don’t think that this is super likely. I think as long as Michigan doesn’t have to play Oregon or Georgia in the semifinal they’re in a good spot. Even if they do, I like this Michigan team over anyone. My prediction- Michigan matches up with Florida State in the semifinal and Georgia in the National Championship with the run defense being the kryptonite for the dawgs and leading to Michigan winning it all. My confidence level in this playing out — 2/10; it was slightly more likely than anything else.

The Nightmare scenario for Michigan — Alabama beats Georgia, Texas loses, Oregon beats Washington, and Florida State loses. This would match Michigan up with Georgia in the semifinal and likely Oregon in the National Championship. I’m still foolishly taking Michigan to win, but I don’t feel good about it anymore.

Whatever happens this weekend- expect chaos and be grateful we’re in Indy and not at home on the couch trying to rationalize another rivalry loss like a certain school about 3 hours south.
