Michigan Football: 3 overreactions from the Minnesota win
By Nick Popio
2. Donovan Edwards should be benched in favor of Kalel Mullings
This is an obvious overreaction that holds little merit. Mullings has been the hotter back the last few weeks, but Edwards is still the much more talented back. Mullings has really come into his role as the power back who can get the short yardage. Edwards is still fighting to make that explosive play that we all know he is capable of doing.
It took Edwards till the fifth game of 2022 to make his mark. In 2023 that is not the case. I would hope that the coaches know that Edwards doesn’t have a score this year, but they are not overly concerned about it like the fans are. He only had two at this point in 2022 and now Leon Franklin has more scores than him one year later.
Mullings is averaging one more yard per carry than Edwards so far this year. Edwards has more yardage than Mullings does though. The idea of making Edwards a full-time receiver is not a bad one, with the emergence of Mullings, but we’ll just have to be overly patient and wait for the breakout game for Edwards that has yet to come.
