2. The defense should have at least four shutouts by now

Heading into week six Michigan football leads the nation in scoring defense by giving up just six points a game. They haven’t played a dynamic offense yet and won’t for a while. Nonetheless, Jesse Minter’s unit is doing what championship defenses do. For reference, the 1997 squad only gave up 26 points through its first five games. The 2023 version is not far behind at 30.

It’s not as simple as most think to shut other teams completely out. East Carolina scored on the last play of the game, UNLV managed to get it in with only a couple of minutes left, while Rutgers wasted no time, but they didn’t do anything the rest of the afternoon. That makes this one an overreaction.

In reality, Michigan’s starting defense has only given up two field goals to Bowling Green and that fluke touchdown pass to Rutgers that Mike Sainristil made up for with his pick-six. In comparison, Georgia hasn’t been as stingy, while Ohio State and Penn State are right on Michigan’s tail as the second and third-ranked schools on that same scoring defensive list.
