Michigan Wolverines news: Aidan Hutchinson dominates again, Roman Wilson a top-10 WR, and more
Michigan football legend Aidan Hutchinson had another big night, plus more in our Michigan Wolverines news roundup.
I don’t know about anyone else, but when I look at this Detroit Lions football team, it’s hard not to think at least a little about the 2021 Michigan football team.
That’s the team that produced the Lions’ best player — Aidan Hutchinson, who might just be the best defensive player in the NFL right now. With his sack and fumble recovery last week, he became the first player in NFL history with 10+ sacks and three interceptions in his 20 games.
Hutchinson followed that up with a dominant effort on Thursday night in a 34-20 win over the Packers with two 1.5 sacks, two tackles, and a tackle for loss. Trust me when I say the former Michigan Wolverines standout made an even bigger impact than that with his pass rush and dominance on the line of scrimmage. But wow have the Lions reshaped that rivalry.
Michigan football hadn’t beaten Ohio State in a decade. Now, the Michigan Wolverines have won two in a row and are looking for a third this November.
The Lions had dropped five in a row to the Packers. Last night’s win was their fourth straight and Hutch has been a huge part of that transformation.
Jack Tuttle is emerging as Michigan football backup QB
According to Chris Balas of The Wolverine, Jack Tuttle has emerged in the backup quarterback competition. The former Indiana transfer was a four-star recruit coming out of high school and probably would give Michigan football the best chance to win in a pinch. He’s at least got some Big Ten starts and experience under his belt.
I haven’t lost faith in Davis Warren, another Michigan Wolverines quarterback in the mix, but he’s taken a step back. Alex Orji and Jayden Denegal haven’t really impressed, so turning to the veteran, Tuttle would make sense.
QB depth is thin though and that’s why McCarthy does need to be careful when he’s running the football. He was smart last week, despite running for over 50 yards and he needs to continue to duck out of bounds any chance he gets.
Roman Wilson ranked 10th among CFB wide receivers
Michigan Wolverines wide receiver Roman Wilson has six touchdown receptions in four games and that was after not catching any against Rutgers. Wilson has 15 receptions for 268 yards and has turned into J.J. McCarthy’s No. 1 option.
Wilson also got some love from On3.com, which has been ranking the top 25 wide receivers in college football every week. Wilson came in 10th heading into Week 5.
