Michigan football could be without both of its starting safeties against East Carolina on Saturday in the season opener.

Jim Harbaugh is usually pretty tight-lipped with the media, but that’s started to change over the years and on Monday night, the Michigan football head coach revealed some players that have been dealing with injuries in fall camp.

There aren’t any major injuries. On offense, Peyton O’Leary and Tyler Morris are two guys that were mentioned by Harbaugh. However, the biggest injuries are on defense as three in the Michigan football secondary could be out.

One of them is No. 3 cornerback Amorion Walker. He’s been limited throughout camp, which is part of the reason why Josh Wallace has taken control of the starting job.

On top of that, Michigan football could be without both Rod Moore and Makari Paige. Harbaugh said both safeties were questionable. Again, Harbaugh said there wasn’t anything to be worried about long term, but the Wolverines could have two new guys starting.

Back in the 2022 recruiting class, Michigan football signed Zeke Berry and Keon Sabb, a pair of top-100 defenders. Berry and Sabb both made positive impressions last season as freshmen.

And there’s a real chance that Berry and Sabb could be starting together on Saturday. Neither played a ton last season, but both Michigan football’s young safeties have impressed this spring and during fall camp.

Moore and Paige are one of the best starting tandems in the country, so there is probably going to be some dropoff. However, it would be a fun look into the future and honestly, Sabb and Berry have star potential.

East Carolina does have a new starting quarterback. He was a former four-star with a big arm. With youngsters in the secondary, the Pirates are sure to test the Wolverines, but I for one feel very confident in Sabb and Berry’s ability to deliver.

Michigan football wants its starters back, but I don’t anticipate that the dropoff is going to be that big on Saturday if the second unit is needed.
