Another top Michigan football recruiting target will announce his commitment this week and things are looking good with 4-star EDGE Jacob Smith.

The Michigan football program has 25 verbal commitments right now for the 2024 recruiting class and No. 26 could be on the board on Thursday.

That’s because four-star EDGE Jacob Smith is finally ready to announce his commitment, as he has picked out Thursday as his decision date.

Smith is coming off an official visit to Michigan football. He also took an official visit to Nebraska in June, which seemed to impress the 6-foot-4, 250-pound pass rusher.

The Wolverines have a lot of built-in advantages though. Michigan football was able to host Smith a couple of times in June because his brother Jerod also took an official visit.

Jerod Smith is a four-star defensive lineman and committed to Michigan football. Both players have said they want to play together and Michigan will give them a chance to do that.

The Wolverines have excelled at developing EDGEs and defensive linemen under Jim Harbaugh, which should be another selling point to Jacob Smith.

According to EJ Holland, Smith will announce his commitment on Thursday and Holland said he doesn’t see any reason to change his prediction.

Why Michigan football is expected to win out

It’s going to take some time for Nebraska to reach the same level as Michigan. The Wolverines are the two-time defending Big Ten champs. And as we said, they have sent a number of EDGE/D-line prospects to the NFL in recent years.

Add in the fact that Jerod Smith has been committed since April and it’s hard to see Jacob Smith not following his brother and committing to the Wolverines.

For Michigan football, if Jacob Smith committed, it would be the fourth four-star EDGE to commit as part of the 2024 class. Dominic Nichols, Devon Baxter, and Elias Rudolph are all four-star prospects via the 247 Sports composite rankings.

Adding Smith would make it one hell of an EDGE haul. Right now, the Wolverines have both crystal balls in their favor and have a 94-percent chance to win his commitment via the On3 prediction machine.
