Michigan basketball fans are hoping the Wolverines can land West Virginia transfer Jose Perez and they got another good sign on Tuesday.

Ever since Jose Perez entered the transfer portal, you got the sense that Michigan basketball was his preferred destination.

There have been lots of rumors and even some intel to back that up. Davis Moseley, formerly of the Michigan Insider, but still a guy with inside knowledge, has been beating the drum about how he feels this is going to be Michigan.

Moseley told GBM Wolverine last week that he felt good about where Michigan baskeball stood with the 6-foot-5 transfer guard that would satisfy a key need.

The Wolverines need more scoring options in the backcourt. Michigan basketball also needs more playmaking, which makes Perez such a good fit. He averaged 18.9 points per game two years ago as he won the MAAC Player of the Year Award. He also averaged 3.5 assists.

Moseley indicated recently that Perez would take some visits and make a decision. We now know that Perez will visit Michigan basketball at the first possible opportunity.

The visit will take on July 28th according to Trilly Donovan. That’s the first possible day that Perez could visit any program, so the fact that he’s taking an official visit to see Michigan basketball can only be viewed as a positive.

Why it’s such good news for Michigan basketball

The fact that Perez is visiting at the first possible opportunity is a good sign. Transfer portal recruiting is a little different than high school recruiting.

Most of the time, a player takes a visit or two and then decides. There are some other big-name programs involved such as Oregon and Gonzaga. Cal has also expressed interest.

Yet, Perez has spent his career (at a few different schools) in the East and the Midwest. So Michigan makes sense in that regard. The Wolverines also have a glaring need for a player like Perez even though he isn’t a high-percentage shooter from deep.

Perez has been a high-usage player and after the loss of Caleb Love, that’s exactly what Juwan Howard needed. Now, it’s about wrapping things up on that July 28th visit.
