Michigan Football: The Good and The Bad on the Recruiting Trail
The bad
I’m going to start with the bad so we can end on a higher note. First off, it appears that the Wolverines are going to lose out on four-star offensive lineman Michael Uini. I wrote a few days ago that the Wolverines were the heavy favorite, however, things have taken a complete turn.
Uini visited Alabama and Georgia, and you can never be comfortable with those two in the picture, after giving the Michigan football coaching staff a silent commitment while on his visit, it appears that Uini has changed his mind and will be heading to Georgia.
Honestly, there’s only one thing that can help prevent this from happening, and that’s winning a national championship. Hopefully, these recruiting losses to SEC schools will give the coaches an extra boost.
Next, cornerback targets Jameer Grimsley and Terhyon Nichols are announcing their commitments over the coming days. It appears unlikely that Michigan football will be the choice for either of them, which leaves the secondary board very thin. If Michigan cannot land Aaron Scott it will be in trouble.
I will say, the Wolverines will likely continue to recruit those cornerbacks until signing day, and there’s a decent chance they could win at least one of them over. For now, however, the news is not great.
Adding on to the defensive back issues, four-star safety Jordan Johnson-Rubell, who the Wolverines fought valiantly for, is set to announce his commitment on July 1st. Unfortunately, it appears he will pick Texas. However, I do expect Michigan football to continue to recruit him. They made serious progress and may have gotten as high as #2 in his recruitment.
Lastly, Deyvid Palepale. Another former Michigan silent commit, Palepale appears poised to pick USC in a fast-changing recruitment. Palepale has family ties in California and is trending toward the Trojans.
As a side note, you cannot blame these kids who gave Michigan silent commitments for changing their minds. It’s a huge decision and they are the ones who get to make it. Now onto the good news.
