Michigan Basketball: Lots of moving parts with potential transfer Antonio Reeves
There are lots of moving parts with potential Michigan basketball transfer target Antonio Reeves and here’s the latest.
The wild offseason continues for Michigan basketball, which is still working on adding pieces to its roster for the 2023-24 season.
Just in the past week or so, two new targets have emerged for Michigan basketball in the transfer portal and one isn’t even technically in the portal yet.
That’s Kentucky guard Antonio Reeves. There have been lots of rumors flying around Twitter about Reeves and his plans for next season.
There were reports that he enrolled in graduate classes at Illinois State, something that Jeff Goodman was able to confirm.
What does it mean for Michigan basketball?
This could mean a couple of different things. One is that Reeves intends to graduate and then enter the transfer portal without having to sit a year.
Only graduates are allowed to transfer a second time without penalty, so if Reeves were to join Michigan baskeball, he would need to graduate. Otherwise, we all know the record of U-M admissions.
However, earlier this week, it felt like Kentucky was in control of things, in terms of convincing him to come back for next season. Chris Balas of The Wolverine reported that NIL was going to play a big factor on the Kentucky side of things.
As in if the NIL was there, Reeves might just stay with the Wildcats. However, Kentucky will be loaded with talented freshmen and Reeves would have a bigger role with Michigan basketball or Indiana — two rumored destinations if he ever enters the portal.
Reeves could be taking classes just to have the option to transfer as a graduate. As Goodman said, there are a lot of moving parts, but if Reeves does enter the portal, I would think the Wolverines would have a great shot to land him, especially with Juwan Howard’s history of sending guys to the NBA.
Paul Mulcahy is another viable option and he’s already in the transfer portal as a graduate from Rutgers. At this point, I’d take either but it does feel like Michigan baskeball needs one or the other to feel good about the roster heading into next season.
