Michigan football hosted transfer portal cornerback Josh Wallace this weekend and reports are indicating positive buzz for the Wolverines afterward.

The 2023 Michigan football roster is really talented. But you can always use more depth, especially at a position like cornerback and it appears like the Wolverines could be closing in on a cornerback commitment from the transfer portal.

While Amorion Walker, Jyaire Hill, Cameron Calhoun, Ja’Den McBurrows, and others give Michigan football plenty of options to start opposite Will Johnson and nickelback Mike Sainristil, U-M has been looking for veteran help at cornerback all offseason.

Things haven’t quite worked out yet. But when Wallace, a former UMass standout, entered the transfer portal recently, Michigan football was a destination that made sense.

Virginia Tech and Oklahoma are also in the mix. Penn State offered too, which tells you something about the kind of player Wallace is and can be.

‘Positive buzz’ for Michigan football

Of any of those teams in the mix, the Wolverines seem like a difficult one to beat. For one, Wallace would have a clear shot at being a starter on a national title contender.

Wallace is a graduate transfer and is 6 feet tall. He also had 32 solo tackles in each of the past two seasons, as well a total of 20 pass breakups and two interceptions in 2022.

Wallace took a two-day visit to the Michigan football program and the feeling coming out of that visit is that the Wolverines are the leader. Josh Henschke of Rivals tweeted that there was ‘positive buzz’ for Michigan football in the recruitment of Wallace. Now, we are just waiting to hear if a decision will follow or more visits.

Landing Wallace would be a big deal. I don’t know if he would start right away, but he would provide a valuable depth piece either way. If some of the younger guys with big-time potential aren’t quite ready for primetime, Wallace will be able to step in.

DJ Turner and Gemon Green will big losses. Wallace wouldn’t be a solution on his own, but he would satisfy the need of a veteran cornerback and Michigan football is in the driver’s seat.
