Michigan Wolverines roundup: A runner-up finish in tennis, season ends for baseball
Things didn’t go as the Michigan Wolverines hoped in the Big Ten tournament or for singles tennis player Ondrej Styler in the national title match.
Fans of the Michigan Wolverines can’t be blamed if they picked up tennis fever this spring after the Wolverines put together some impressive performances.
Both Michigan’s men’s and women’s tennis teams advanced to the National Quarterfinals of their respective NCAA tournaments before getting beaten by Georgia and TCU.
Yet, the tennis season wasn’t over as the Michigan Wolverines still had the national singles tournament to play and Ondrej Styler got a huge win on Friday to become the first Michigan tennis player to advance to the championship round since 1987.
Yet, Styler wasn’t able to bring home a national championship for the Wolverines. He lost the first set in a tiebreaker, then rallied to even the match after a tiebreaking win. However, he dropped the decisive set 6-2 to finish as the national runner-up.
Michigan baseball eliminated from the Big Ten tournament
After two straight wins over Indiana and Illinois, the Michigan Wolverines were eliminated by Iowa after a 5-0 defeat on Saturday.
The Hawkeyes also defeated Michigan on Tuesday and knocked off the Wolverines 13-3, despite Michigan having its best pitcher on the mound and the Big Ten pitcher of the Year in Connor O’Halloran.
O’Halloran came out of the bullpen for the Wolverines on Saturday and gave up three runs on four hits in one inning as Iowa put the game away. Brandon Mann was given the loss after allowing the first run to score. He walked four and allowed one run in two innings.
The problem is that it didn’t really matter because Iowa only needed one run after holding the Wolverines to just three hits. Michigan finished the 2023 season with a 28-28 record. U-M won’t make the NCAA tournament.
