Michigan football has been projected by Steve Wiltfong of 247 Sports to land three-star running back Micah Kaapana, which tells us a couple of things.

Crystal ball projections are never a bad thing, but the latest projection for Michigan football is one that gives me a little pause about another top target.

Taylor Tatum is a top-100 running back and a borderline five-star running back that the Wolverines are heavily in the mix to get.

The running back from Texas did receive a crystal ball projection to the Wolverines and just said last week that he was interested in being part of a 1-2 tandem with Jordan Marshall.

But on Monday, Steve Wiltfong projected another running back to Michigan football. This time it was three-star running back Micah Kaapana.

What this latest crystal ball means for Michigan football

Kaapana is 5-foot-11, 195 pounds, and rushed for over 1,000 yards last season on his high school team. The three-star back is ranked 710th overall via the 247 Sports composite rankings and he’s out of Las Vegas.

Nebraska leads the way among other contenders in the mix along with Oklahoma State, Washington State, and Hawaii.

The first official visit he will take will be to Hawaii. Kaapana will then visit Michigan football on the June 9th weekend before taking his trip to Nebraska on June 23rd.

It wouldn’t shock me at all if Michigan football wound up taking three running backs in 2024. I think this would show that the Wolverines know how tough it will be to land Taylor’s commitment.

That doesn’t mean it’s not possible. The crystal ball from Texas insider Mike Roach of 247 Sports is notable. But none have followed. We’ll see what happens this summer, but if Michigan football is able to get Kaapana on board by making a strong push, it’s a smart play.

The Wolverines could probably take three running backs anyway. It’s likely that Blake Corum and Donovan Edwards are gone after the season and there is always the possibility of someone leaving via the transfer portal.

Michigan does need at least two backs and taking Kaapana would do that, plus it wouldn’t stop the Wolverines from still pushing for Taylor, just more insurance for the position if they aren’t able to get the elite running back from Texas.
