Michigan Wolverines tennis teams knocked out in national quarterfinals
The tennis season came to an end for both Michigan Wolverines tennis teams following runs to the national quarterfinals this week.
It was another successful season for both the men’s and women’s Michigan tennis teams. Both squads advanced to the national quarterfinals following wins last weekend, however, both teams saw their seasons come to a close.
The Michigan men’s tennis team was supposed to play on Thursday against TCU in a rematch of the College Football Playoff semifinals in football.
I was hoping that the Michigan Wolverines were able to exact some revenge, but TCU proved to be too tough and despite the match getting delayed by a day, the Horned Frogs won 4-1.
The Michigan Wolverines were able to score the doubles point in the match, which is worth one point after notching two wins in doubles. Yet, none of those victories carried over to the singles competition and the second-ranked Horned Frogs moved on to the quarterfinals.
Both Michigan tennis teams get knocked out of the NCAA tournament
What’s sort of ironic is that the Michigan Wolverines women’s tennis team was also eliminated by Georgia, which knocked out Michigan in the football semifinals after the 2021 season.
Again, I was hoping for some measure of revenge, but the Bulldogs, who are ranked No. 3 in women’s tennis, took the doubles point and swept the fifth-ranked Wolverines 4-0.
The women’s tennis team still finished the season with 25 wins and got its highest-ever seed in the NCAA tournament according to MGoBlue.
It was the second consecutive national quarterfinal appearance for the Michigan Wolverines in the men’s tennis team. Michigan also finished as the runner-up in the Big Ten.
The Wolverines posted a total record of 27-5.
