15 best Michigan football NFL careers ever
8. Bill Hewitt, offensive/defensive end
Bill Hewitt was an original. The Michigan football program has become known for its famed winged helmet, but Hewitt was known in the NFL for refusing to wear a helmet and was actually one of the last players to wear one in the NFL.
Defensive players were hard to measure from his era (1932-1943) because they didn’t keep track of things like tackles and sacks. Hewitt also played “end” which is basically tight end and during the 1934 season, he led the NFL with five touchdown receptions.
For his career with the Bears, Eagles, and Steagles, Hewitt caught 103 passes for 1,638 yards and 23 touchdowns. That’s an average of 15.9 yards per reception.
The former Michigan great also won two NFL championships and was a four-time First-Team All-Pro selection. Hewitt was also inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1971.
