10 biggest Michigan football NFL Draft busts of all time
7. Tyrone Wheatley (17th overall by Giants in 1995)
Tyrone Wheatley was one of the greatest Michigan football running backs of all time and fans will always remember his performance in the 1993 Rose Bowl win over Washington. He won the MVP award with 235 yards on 15 carries and touchdown runs of 88, 56, and 24 yards.
A couple of years after that, Wheatley was selected 17th overall by the New York Giants and it seemed like the perfect marriage. The Giants wanted to be a physical football team and few backs seemed to fit that identity better than Wheatley who had 47 rushing touchdowns with Michigan.
Wheatley ended up having a solid NFL career, but it certainly didn’t meet expectations. Only once in his first four seasons did he rush for more than 500 yards with the Giants. He did have a 1,000-yard season with the Raiders and another with over 900 yards in Oakland.
Ultimately, the 6-foot, 235-pounder ran for 4,962 yards and 30 touchdowns. He averaged 3.9 yards per carry. However, his career will always feel like a disappointment.
