8. James Pace (No. 8 overall in 1958 by the 49ers)

Michigan football has a long history of running backs going early in the NFL draft and one of the first was former Wolverine James Pace going in the top 10 to the 49ers back in 1958.

Pace led the Big Ten in rushing touchdowns in 1957 and caught 11 passes in his final season playing for the Wolverines before he was drafted by the Niners.

The former All-American running back didn’t have much of an NFL career though. He played just 12 games for the 49ers before he retired. Pace ran the ball 52 times for 161 yards and two touchdowns and averaged just 3.1 yards per carry.

Pace didn’t stick for long either. He did play another season of pro ball in the CFL but became an actor, and like Harmon, he gets a bit of a pass for being selected before the modern era of the NFL draft.
