Michigan Wolverines: Baseball clinches series win vs MSU, softball cruises
Michigan baseball clinched a series win against Michigan State with a second straight win, while the Michigan Wolverines beat No. 21 Northwestern in softball.
Beating Michigan State is always fun and the Michigan Wolverines baseball team delivered a win over the Spartans for the second straight day.
Connor O’Halloran earned a complete-game victory for the Michigan Wolverines, which was his seventh of the season. He allowed seven runs in nine innings while striking out five in the 8-3 win.
As it happened, Michigan scored the winning runs in the bottom of the first inning after scoring four in its first at-bat. Joey Velazquez got the Wolverines on the board with a two-run single. Jack Van Remortel brought two more home with a single and suddenly, it was 4-0 U-M.
The Spartans had trimmed the lead to one at 4-3 when Van Remortel answered with a solo home run in the sixth inning. Back-to-back doubles by Cody Jefferis and Ted Burton extended the lead to 7-3 before Burton drove home another run in the eighth.
The Michigan Wolverines are now 21-17 overall, as well as 9-5 in the Big Ten. Michigan is now second in the Big Ten in winning percentage (.643) and trails Indiana (9-3) by two in the loss column. Michigan will try to sweep Sparty on Sunday at 1 PM EST on BTN+.
Michigan Wolverines dominate No. 21 Northwestern in softball
After losing a heartbreaker to Northwestern on Friday night, the Michigan softball team rebounded with a resounding 15-0 defeat on Saturday.
It was the most runs the Michigan Wolverines have scored in softball in four years dating back to a win over Toldeo in the 2019 season. Keke Tholl hit two home runs and drove in six runs for the Wolverines. She was also 3-for-3.
Indiana Langford also homered for Michigan in the win. She notched three RBI, as did teammate Lexi Blair in the dominating win.
Lauren Derkoswki allowed just one hit in five innings of work to help run-rule Northwestern. She walked two, hit one batter, and struck out six in the 80-pitch outing. The two teams will meet on Sunday at 12 PM EST.
