One of the Michigan Wolverines’ greatest basketball teams was honored on Saturday night, plus hockey loses an outdoor classic and more.

Michigan basketball notched an important win over Michigan State on Saturday that and that was huge for the Wolverines as they aim to make the NCAA tournament.

A former head coach of the Michigan Wolverines was in attendance to see it and that was John Beilein, the Michigan basketball legend, who led U-M to a pair of national title games, two Big Ten tournament championships, and two Big-Ten regular-season titles.

Beilein and the 2013 Michigan basketball team were honored in the Crisler Center and it was great to see Coach Beilein back in Ann Arbor.

That team will always be one of my favorite Michigan Wolverines basketball teams too. Trey Burke is a legend — right there with Chris Webber — and his shot over Kansas is still one of my favorite sports memories of all time.

Michigan Wolverines fall to Ohio State

Michigan hockey and Ohio State battled in the “Faceoff by the Lake” on Saturday, playing outdoors in the Cleveland Browns Stadium.

Unfortunately, the Michigan Wolverines saw their eight-game unbeaten streak come to an end as the Buckeyes earned a 4-2 win thanks to a three-goal second period. Gavin Brindley found the back of the net for Michigan in the second to trim the OSU lead to 2-1.

Then, down 3-1, Eric Ciccolini scored to give Michigan hockey some hope with about eight minutes left. Yet, Ohio State added another insurance goal to give Michigan its 10th loss of the season but its first since January 20th.

The Wolverines are 20-10-2 after the tie with Ohio State on Thursday. Michigan is 12-9-1 in the Big Ten and will wrap up the regular season next weekend at home against Notre Dame.

Rough day on the diamond for Michigan Wolverines

The Michigan Wolverines were also in action in both softball and baseball on Saturday. The baseball team split on opening day, beating Fresno State but falling to Michigan State. Yet, Michigan fell to 1-2 after an 11-2 loss at the hands of UC San Diego.

The Wolverines scored first but managed just six hits. Tito Flores had two. Ted Burton also added a double. Jacob Denner was hit with the loss after allowing six hits and three runs in five innings.

In softball, the 25th-ranked Michigan Wolverines had two games and split. The first game of the day was against fifth-ranked Oklahoma State and OSU knocked off U-M by a score of 15-6.

That game lasted just six innings, but Michigan softball bounced back against Mississippi State which actually built a 3-0 lead. The Wolverines tied the score with three runs in the fourth inning. The rally was started by Keke Tholl who blasted a home run.

Audrey LeClair then tied the game with a two-run single. Michigan grabbed the lead with another run in the fifth before the Bulldogs evened the score, which set the stage for the seventh inning as Maddie Erickson delivered an RBI single to put the Wolverines in front.

Lauren Derkowski finished off the win and got a complete-game victory. She tossed seven innings, allowed four runs on five hits, and struck out six. She’s now 3-2 on the season. Michigan softball is now 6-3 on the season and will face 19th-ranked Duke Sunday at 11 am EST.
