In our latest Michigan Wolverines news roundup, we recap a rough night for hoops, the latest on the Michigan football QB coach search, and more.

Thursday proved to be a rough night for the Michigan Wolverines on the basketball court as the men’s basketball team dropped a home game to No. 1 Purdue (75-70), while the Michigan women’s basketball team dropped its second straight game on the road to Maryland.

In terms of the Michigan basketball men’s team, the Wolverines started strong against Purdue and led for much of the first half. Yet, with the score tied 28-28, the Boilermakers went on a 13-0 run, and Michigan basketball never really made a serious run at the lead after that.

We’ll have more of a breakdown of the loss later at GBMWolverine.com, but for now, it’s another missed opportunity for a team that is running out of chances to build its resume. Michigan basketball is 11-9 overall and 5-4 in the Big Ten.

It needs 13 Big Ten wins in my estimation to make the NCAA tournament which would mean an 8-3 finish. It’s possible but doesn’t seem likely the way the past few weeks have done.

Hunter Dickinson was solid with 21 points, seven rebounds, and four assists. He just didn’t get enough help. Hopefully, Jett Howard won’t have to miss any more games.

The women’s team was down seven after the first quarter, 10 at the half, and trailed Maryland by 12 going into the fourth. The Michigan Wolverines rallied but fell 72-64. Leigha Brown had 16 points, followed by 15 from Laila Phelia. Emily Kiser added 11 and nine boards.

Michigan isn’t in danger of missing the women’s tournament right now at 16-5, but getting into the top four of the final Big Ten standings is going to be difficult. The Wolverines are also three games back of first place, which makes a league title, not at all likely.

Michigan football QB search update

We have talked a lot about who could potentially replace Matt Weiss as Michigan football quarterbacks coach. He was also co-offensive coordinator last season.

Brian Griese’s name emerged as one potential target. Another name that has emerged is Tee Martin who is the wide receivers coach for the Ravens. Reportedly, from Sam Webb gathered from Jim Harbaugh himself, neither has been contacted about the job.

So Michigan football fans don’t know who it will be, but it seems safe to assume it won’t be Griese or Martin.
