Michigan football still needs some help at the cornerback position and here is a new name that the Wolverines reportedly have an interest in.

In a bit of a surprise, Michigan football has been really active in the transfer portal and the Wolverines landed multiple projected starters.

However, they might not be done. With the departures of Gemon Green and DJ Turner to the NFL draft, Michigan football has a clear need at the cornerback position.

There are some solid options with Jyaire Hill, Myles Pollard, Ja’Den McBurrows, and others who can push for playing time. Yet, if there is one supposed weakness looking at the projected depth chart, it’s that cornerback position.

The idea of adding a cornerback from the transfer portal isn’t new, but Michigan football hasn’t had any success. However, a recent entry — just last week — Davison Igbinosun, formerly of Ole Miss, is a name to know according to Sam Webb of The Michigan Insider.

Cornerback depth is a key need for Michigan football

Igbinosun was ranked No. 162 overall in the 2022 recruiting class and was recruited to Ole Miss by former Michigan football assistant coach Chris Partridge, who was recently let go.

That ranking is according to the 247 sports composite rankings. Igbinosun is out of New Jersey and after earning freshman All-American honors, he’s a target for Michigan football.

Webb reported that Partridge has given Michigan football an endorsement and that there is “mutual interest” between the two sides. However, Rutgers, USC, Texas A&M, and Tennessee are some of the other schools involved, so winning this transfer portal battle isn’t going to be easy.

The Wolverines already have Will Johnson slotted to the be No. 1 cornerback next season with Mike Sainristil coming back to play the nickel. There are other talented players on the roster, so I don’t think it’s make or break for Michigan to land a DB in the portal.

However, you can never have enough talented cornerbacks and it would be nice to solidify that spot on the depth chart going into spring ball and Igbinosun would definitely do that.
