Michigan Wolverines news: Matt Weiss fired, Blake Corum’s NIL details and more
Michigan football co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Matt Weiss was fired on Friday, plus more Michigan Wolverines headlines.
It seemed like only a matter of time before Matt Weiss would be relieved of his duties within the Michigan football program once it came to light that he was being investigated for “computer crimes.”
Your guess is as good as mine as to what that actually means. We know it doesn’t mean anything nefarious such as pornography or anything of that nature based on the police reports, but on Friday, it was still enough for Weiss to be fired by the Michigan Wolverines.
Weiss was the co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for Michigan football in 2022 after being the QB coach in 2021. Michigan football won the Big Ten championship and made the College Football Playoff in each of his two seasons.
The search is underway to find a replacement and we have laid out a list of nine potential candidates for Jim Harbaugh and the Michigan Wolverines to consider.
Blake Corum expected to earn $1 million in NIL
Nick Baumgardner wrote a really interesting piece on Michigan football and its NIL collective that focused on Blake Corum, who is expected to make over a million dollars.
That’s a good thing for Michigan football. Corum was a Heisman favorite before he injured his knee and decided to return for his senior season instead of going to the NFL.
NIL has been a huge topic in conversation surrounding Michigan football recruiting since the Wolverines have a recruiting class in 2023 that barely ranked in the top 20 of the recruiting rankings despite coming off a playoff berth.
It was thought that Michigan needed to reach the playoff to hit that next level of recruiting and in part because of NIL, it hasn’t happened yet. Maybe this is a sign of things to come.
Wrestling and hockey both suffer defeats
In a dual of top-three wrestling teams in the NCAA, the Michigan Wolverines were defeated 30-8 by Penn State on Friday night in Happy Valley.
Michigan’s heavyweight Mason Parris won a decision over top-ranked Greg Kerkvliet, which is notable but outside of that, the Wolverines struggled against the No. 1 Nittany Lions.
The Wolverines entered the match ranked No. 3 on the season and undefeated in dual competition, however, Penn State is loaded, so it’s nothing to be ashamed of.
Michigan hockey also lost a heartbreaker to No. 2 Minnesota by a score of 4-3 in overtime. The Wolverines scored three second-period goals to take a 3-2 advantage into the third, yet the Gophers were able to tie and win in the extra frame.
Minnesota tied the game with less than five seconds left in regulation and scored the winner with just eight seconds left in overtime.
