3 thoughts on Jim Harbaugh remaining Michigan Football head coach
Michigan football head coach Jim Harbaugh is sticking around. The details are vague but President Santa Ono announced he is staying on Monday.
There have been a number of key announcements for Michigan football in recent days as some key players have pledged to return. But none were bigger than the announcement by school president Santa Ono that Jim Harbaugh would return as head coach.
That always seemed like the most likely outcome. However, there were some nervous moments, such as when Harbaugh interviewed with the Broncos. He was called one of their top choices at one point.
Contract negotiations and things dragged on for a bit until Ono made an announcement last week that he fully supported Harbaugh and wanted to ensure he remained as the head coach.
Harbaugh put out his own statement thanking Ono for his support and according to Ono, Harbaugh called him on Monday to tell him he will be back as Michigan football coach.
Here is what Harbaugh had to say:
Here are three thoughts.
Players and Harbaugh committed to one goal
The message from Ono didn’t say Harbaugh had agreed to an extension, although I believe that will be coming soon enough.
It should make Harbaugh the highest-paid coach in the Big Ten and put him right alongside the other elite head coaches in college football. He’s earned that right after winning two straight Big Ten championships and winning back-to-back showdowns against Ohio State.
Michigan football flatlined in the College Football Playoff, but that’s not all on the head coach. The players seem to be on a mission to get another shot and we have seen that play out with Blake Corum, Mike Sainristil, Zak Zinter, Trevor Keegan, Cornelius Johnson, and Michael Barrett all announcing that they would be back for 2023.
Corum even said he didn’t know for sure if Harbaugh was coming back. You have to think the players and their commitment to winning a national championship swayed Harbaugh.
His players were all in and now that Harbaugh has said he is remaining, he will be too. That’s who he is and at the end of the day, I want him as Michigan football head coach as long as he wants to be here, which hopefully, is for the rest of his coaching career.
Jim Harbaugh and Michigan are perfect for each other and I’m glad they saw that.
