Michigan Football: Breaking down commitment of Chris Ewald in 2025
Michigan football landed its first commitment in the 2025 recruiting class and here’s what to make of the pledge by Chris Ewald.
The Michigan football team is looking to finalize its 2023 recruiting class in the coming days, but on Friday, one of the top cornerbacks in the 2025 class announced his commitment to the Wolverines.
Chris Ewald is ranked 30th overall right now according to the On3 consensus rankings and he’s also ranked among the top 10 at cornerback, as well as in the state of Florida.
According to Chad Simmons of On3, the commitment, which he told coaches about on Thursday, came as a surprise, however, he had visited the school a few times already including for Michigan football’s 41-17 win over Penn State this season at the Big House.
“I feel like I have a great connection with coach Grant (Newsome) and coach (Jim) Harbaugh,” Ewald told Simmons.
Ewald is 6-foot-1, 160 pounds, and had a number of big-time suitors. He’s from the Miami area and the Hurricanes are in the mix, as is Penn State and about 20 others such as Georgia, Florida, Auburn, LSU, Texas A&M, Oregon, and more.
What this commitment means for Michigan football
It’s interesting on a few fronts. For one, Ewald is a spectacular player and has to see what Will Johnson is doing. Who wouldn’t want to follow that development path? And one thing about Michigan in the Harbaugh era, the highly-ranked players tend to produce and go to the NFL.
The commitment is a surprise and it’s early for sure. The signing day for his recruiting class is about two full years away.
Still, when a recruit this good wants to commit, of course, you are going to take it. Ewald didn’t say he would shut down his recruitment completely but said he felt sure he would play for the Wolverines.
The elite cornerback in 2025 committed for a reason. A lot can change between now and then, but it’s a good sign that even in the NIL era, Michigan football can still land top-100 talents.
Sure they will have to defend that commitment but that’s a good problem to have, especially when you’re talking about someone as talented as Ewald.
