Is Michigan Football rematch with Ohio State on the way?
After the events of Friday and Saturday, could Michigan football find itself paired up with Ohio State in the College Football Playoff?
Michigan football is going back to the College Football Playoff and that was pretty much guaranteed when the Wolverines defeated Ohio State last week in Columbus.
Losses by TCU and USC have made things even more interesting. I don’t see Michigan football falling any lower than No. 2. TCU is 12-1 without a conference title and even if the Wolverines lose, they would both have the same record and the committee ranked U-M ahead last week.
It’s possible if there was a blowout loss, TCU could move up, but Ohio State is the other animal and I don’t see the Buckeyes jumping Michigan regardless.
What is possible though is a Michigan-Ohio State rematch.
Will the Wolverines face Buckeyes again?
The Buckeyes felt very confident after USC lost last night and Ohio State fans are feeling even better after TCU lost to Kansas State.
Despite an overtime loss, TCU should be in the College Football Playoff. People will make the case for Alabama and Ohio State. Alabama fans are making the case for the Crimson Tide over the Buckeyes and some will say both teams should be in over the Horned Frogs.
If TCU had gotten blown out possibly. But the Horned Frogs lost in overtime to a top-10 team, on a neutral field in a championship game — something Alabama and OSU failed to make.
That should mean something. Who knows if it will but it should.
If it does, then Michigan football will likely play TCU in the semifinals of the College Football Playoff. Michigan still has two top-8 (ranked) wins and that’s something no other team can say.
Of course, Michigan football should be focused on the Big Ten title game. However, it’s not hard not to look ahead and the drama will be whether or not the Wolverines face Ohio State.
It’s hard for me to see the committee penalizing TCU for losing in overtime in a championship game, while Ohio State didn’t do anything since their 22-point home loss.
Then again, the TV ratings might make it difficult to pass up, although Ohio State-Georgia is going to be just as tantalizing. Considering that Michigan just played Ohio State, I’d rather not see them in the semifinals.
If both teams make the championship game so be it, but hopefully the committee will make the right move and keep TCU third. Otherwise, what’s the point of making a conference title game?
