Michigan football keeps rolling in commitments from Ohio, but the Wolverines are also trending for other key recruiting targets.

As I said the other day, the wins in Ohio keep on coming and another came on the recruiting trail for Michigan football on Monday as Jason Hewlett committed to the Wolverines.

Hewlett was another that flipped from Cincinnati to Michigan football. He took a visit before he decommitted and then after re-opening his recruitment, it was clear that U-M was the favorite.

Not only is Hewlett the fourth commitment from the state of Ohio in four days and the third from the 2023 class, but he’s also another really interesting prospect. He’s listed at 6-foot-3, 217 pounds, and EJ Holland reports Michigan football is taking him as a defensive athlete.

That means he could be a linebacker, a safety, or maybe even an EDGE. Michigan has added a few late risers in this class and Friday’s commitment of Breeon Ishmail reminds me of Hewlett. He’s 6-foot-4, 216 pounds, and could also be a linebacker or EDGE.

Cameron Calhoun, another 2023 commitment, who is a cornerback, has also been moving up the rankings and Ohio State was showing interest before he committed.

Hewlett is ranked 744th overall in the 2023 consensus rankings from On3 but he’s rated as a four-star by 247 sports and this coaching staff has proven its ability to mold talent regardless of the ranking.

The addition of Hewlett should lead to a fifth commitment from the state of Ohio as D’Juan Waller, a three-star safety from Chaney, Ohio State, just like Hewlett, is expected to decide soon in favor of the Wolverines. He’s ranked in the 1500s, but again, if the staff sees a take, I trust it.

A four-star commitment could be on the way

Another 2023 commitment Michigan football has been trying to win for a while is that of Jyaire Hill. Illinois moved in front and looked like the favorite but after the past few weeks, that has changed and Holland is now projecting Hill to the Wolverines.

This would be a massive get for the Wolverines as he’s ranked No. 182 overall in the 2023 class and the second-best player in Illinois, as well as 24th in the country at his position.

Michigan football has just one cornerback so far in this class, so this would be a huge addition, especially since he’s 6-foot-2. Imagine him out there with Will Johnson and Myles Pollard?

With Holland’s projection, Michigan now has an 87-percent chance to land Hill’s commitment, which would add to Michigan’s recruiting momentum even more.
