3 overreactions from Michigan Football’s win over Illinois
By Nick Popio
3. J.J. McCarthy is not the solution at quarterback
Some will say that this was a true statement and at times on Saturday it looked that way, but he still gives Michigan football its best shot to win games over everyone else.
That makes this an overreaction. McCarthy has been struggling for three weeks now but didn’t have to make plays to win as he did versus the Illini.
Michigan doesn’t win this affair without him either.
There’s no Cade McNamara to turn to and Davis Warren should not be ready for action in a close matchup. McCarthy hasn’t been playing like a five-star recruit, but he is winning week after week and that’s what really matters. Stats don’t matter when your club is winning and has a realistic shot at championships.
His wideouts are going to have to step it up though. They have been a disappointment for most of 2022, besides Ronnie Bell and Luke Schoonmaker.
Roman Wilson has made catches in certain moments, but there’s no one guy that has improved their stock to be a name that opposing defenses must double team or provide more of a threat for Michigan’s offense.
