Michigan football associate head coach Biff Poggi will be leaving after the season and it’s a huge blow for the Wolverines.

There are plenty of good side effects from winning, but on Tuesday, Michigan football was reminded of one of the negative side effects as Biff Poggi, a trusted assistant of Jim Harbaugh, has accepted the head coaching job for Charlotte.

First off, congrats to Biff Poggi. I’m super happy for him and wish him nothing but the best. I personally don’t know the man, but if he’s anything like what Jim Harbaugh says, he’s one hell of a coach and you can’t argue with the results of the past two seasons.

"“Biff’s a great mentor and has been that for me,” Harbaugh told The Athletic in a recent Poggi profile. “He likes to scheme it up, and he knows how to coach and helps coach the coaches. … As far as helping me personally, there’s not too many decisions that I make that I don’t run by Biff and we talk it out.”"

Matt Zentitz of On3 was the first to report the news. He also reported that Poggi would finish out the season with Michigan football.

What this means for Michigan football?

As Harbaugh said, Poggi helped Michigan football in a number of ways. He’s credited for helping to turn around the culture in 2021 and also is a big asset on the recruiting trail. Michigan would not have signed Derrick Moore in 2022 or landed Eyabi Okie without him.

Of course, when you win, people are going to hire your assistants. Harbaugh has had a lot of experience with that and just last offseason, he replaced his offensive coordinator and defensive coordinator — quite successfully I might add.

No head coach has a perfect track record for hiring assistants, but Harbaugh’s has been pretty good. So I feel confident in his ability to hire a solid replacement, but it will be hard to match with Poggi brought to Michigan football.

Next. A key recruiting weekend for Wolverines. dark

I wouldn’t be surprised at all if he had success at Charlotte or if he was able to get a bunch of players from the DMV down there. He can recruit and he can win and Michigan will miss him.
