Special teams: D

It wasn’t a great night for the special teams. Anytime you have a punt blocked and returned for a touchdown, it’s going to be a bad night for the grades.

The Wolverines’ grade got even worse as Jake Moody, who rarely misses, missed two field goals. One of them was a longer attempt but it still made the first half a lot more interesting than it needed to be.

Coaching: B

The defensive staff did a spectacular job. Jesse Minter has been a home-run hire and it’s possible that he’s even better than Mike Macdonald. Three points in the second half of the last four games, when two of those teams were Penn State and Michigan State is impressive.

The effort was impressive Saturday too. The offense also did a better job of opening things up in the second half. Michigan also went 6-for-6 in the red zone. Still, there wasn’t enough imagination in the red zone and I’d like to see McCarthy freed up to make more plays.

McCarthy is too much in game-manager mode. The coaching staff needs to let him sling it at some point.
