Michigan Football’s playoff ranking is annoying but won’t matter

Don’t get mad about the disrespect shown to Michigan football by the playoff selection committee because the Wolverines just need to keep winning.

This is something that will need to be said again before the season is over but as long as Michigan football keeps winning, the CFB Playoff rankings aren’t going to matter one bit.

Just like last season, everything will take care of itself. If Michigan winds up beating Ohio State and winning the Big Ten, it’s going to the playoff.

Even if it slipped up against Illinois, turned around, and beat the Buckeyes on the road, and then beat what would be a top-10 Illinois team on a neutral field, Michigan would likely make it.

It’s highly unlikely that we will end up with four unbeaten Power-5 champions. TCU has been living dangerously and so has Clemson, having had to rally twice now to beat teams ranked outside the top 20, which is why I don’t understand Michigan football being ranked behind Clemson.

Michigan has played like a top-4 team

The committee always talks about game control and Michigan has controlled its opponents as well as just about any team in the country.

Michigan football hasn’t trailed or been tied for a second in a fourth quarter this season. Penn State grabbed a one-point lead early in the second half, only for Michigan to score a couple of minutes later in what ended up as a 24-point win with over 400 yards rushing against a top-20 team.

The only single-digit win of the season was against Maryland and the Terps are a six-win team. LSU wasn’t dinged for losing to Florida State (5-3) in what was essentially a home game, so why isn’t Michigan getting credit for beating the Terps and Iowa on the road?

As I said, I don’t want to get into too much because it’s basically irrelevant. Michigan isn’t going to the College Football Playoff unless it beats Ohio State and that’s all there is to it.

An 11-1 Michigan team without a win over Ohio State has no shot at making the playoff and if there was any doubt about that, the committee removed it on Tuesday night.
