Michigan football is heading to Iowa City this weekend for the first time since the Hawkeyes upset the Wolverines in 2016.

It’s hard to not have flashbacks to the 2016 Michigan-Iowa game at Kinnick Stadium. It seems like forever ago, but I can picture that game as clear as day. In year two of head coach Jim Harbaugh, the Wolverines traveled to Iowa with a 9-0 record with all of their goals in front of them.

Michigan was leading Iowa 10-8 at halftime, the Hawkeyes’ first score game of the game came courtesy of a safety, go figure. There would be a total of 9 points scored in the second half, two field goals by Iowa pushed them to victory as the second one came as time expired for the walk-off win.

Michigan and Iowa have only faced two times since that game, the Maize and Blue won both which includes last season’s Big Ten Championship game which they dominated 42-3 to send them to the College Football Playoff.

The Wolverines are coming off of a close win over Maryland where they showed the whole country that they have some weaknesses.

Iowa is quietly 3-1 after some weak performances. The Hawkeyes’ offense has been a laughing stock so far this season, but they’re coming off a 27-10 victory at Rutgers.

It has been low scoring between these two teams the last couple of times they have faced each other, outside of the 2021 Big Ten Championship game. The Wolverines beat the Hawkeyes in 2019 at the Big House with the final score being 10-3.

Iowa’s defense is still their stronghold and if they can disrupt the Michigan offense, they will have a shot to knock off the Wolverines once again.

Michigan hasn’t won in Iowa City since 2005. The Wolverines have high hopes once again this season as they’re looking to repeat as Big Ten Champions and get back to the College Football Playoff, but first, they will have to survive Kinnick Stadium and its magic.
