Special teams are ELITE

One of the most underrated aspects of last year’s team was the special teams. Michigan football has and still has arguably the best punter/kicker combination in the country and frankly, I’m starting to believe it has the best special teams coach in the country too.

People will scoff at this, but Jay Harbaugh is going to be a head coach someday. He’s a great recruiter, he’s coached all over the place and been successful and his special teams’ work has been off the charts.

The Wolveriners forced just one turnover in the win over UConn, but got two impact plays on teams. First was a blocked punt by Caden Kolesar. That didn’t count as a turnover but it was as good as one as the offense got a short field and cashed in soon after.

Later in the game, A.J. Henning returned a punt for a touchdown. There shouldn’t be any question about him owning that job now. He’s not touching the ball enough on offense and each kick/punt return is an opportunity for him to go to the house.

Michigan football has the No. 1 scoring offense in the country, as well as the No. 4 scoring defense. It also has as good a special teams unit as there is in college football.

Next. 3 takeaways from destruction of UConn. dark

And that’s just one of many, many reasons to feel optimistic about the Wolverines as they enter Big Ten play next week.
