Notre Dame has a no-visit policy in place for its commitments so it was a good sign to see an Irish commit visiting Michigan football on Saturday.

There are a lot of different ways to recruit and some head coaches are certainly better at it than others. Yet, one thing that’s tried and true, is if you win, recruiting tends to take care of itself.

That’s something we tried to remind Michigan football fans of this past summer. The Wolverines were a little slow to transition to the NIL era of recruiting and it cost them early.

Things got better over the course of the summer as Michigan football refined its own pitch, but that wasn’t before some big losses on the trail to teams like Notre Dame. In fact, it’s been well-documented how many recruits U-M lost to the Irish.

One of them was in-state, top-100 defensive end Brandon Davis-Swain.

Davis-Swain is 6-foot-4, 260 pounds, and ranked 76th overall in the 2024 recruiting class according to the 247 sports composite rankings. Out of West Bloomfield, where Ron Bellamy was formerly the head coach, this should have been a slam dunk.

However, that connection has started to fade just a bit. Dillon Tatum went to Michigan State in 2022, yet Semaj Morgan and Amir Herring (2023 Michigan commitments) are both from West Bloomfield and were on campus Saturday for the win over UConn along with Brandon Davis-Swain.

What this visit means for Michigan football

Anytime you can get another commitment on campus, it’s a big deal, especially when the recruit is close to home and a top-100 guy as Davis-Swain is. When it’s Notre Dame, it means even more because of their no-visit policy for committed recruits. Davis-Swain obviously didn’t abide by that.

The ties to Michigan are strong and with Notre Dame struggling on the field (0-2) this season and also losing to CAL early in their game on Saturday, it feels like open season for flips.

Michigan football is ranked in the top five and doesn’t look like it’s going to lose any time soon. Things can change quickly in recruiting and we’ve seen that over the past few weeks.

Notre Dame’s class is now in jeopardy and Michigan’s is going to be on the rise very soon.
