Michigan football dominated UConn on Saturday to improve to 3-0 and here are some gut reactions from the win, as well as highlights from a 59-0 win.

The Wolverines weren’t perfect against UConn and honestly, I’m starting to get a little worried about the running game, but all in all, it was a solid performance in all three phases.

The defense was lights out, especially in the first half when UConn managed just 64 yards. Zion Turner attempted 14 passes and completed three for 12 yards. That’s less than a yard per attempt, which is insane.

The special teams continued to be elite too. A blocked punt gave Michigan football a short field, which led to a Blake Corum touchdown run. And A.J. Henning returned a punt for a touchdown and that led to a 38-0 halftime lead.

J.J. McCarthy also had a stellar opening half (10-of-13 for 172 yards) without throwing a touchdown. Yet, he did complete three passes of more than 30 yards including this dart to Luke Schoonmaker. Blake Corum also scored four touchdowns, including the one after the Schoonmaker catch-and-run for 31 yards that made it 38-0 at the break.

In the second half, McCarthy who finished 15-of-18 for 214 yards, led another touchdown drive. Blake Corum scored his fifth touchdown and also ripped off a 20-yard run in the second half to finish with 71 yards on 12 carries. The Wolverines added a sixth TD run by Alex Orji in the fourth quarter as well as a touchdown pass by Alan Bowman to make it 59-0.

As a team, Michigan averaged just 4.7 yards per attempt. Is that a concern? Here are some thoughts on that and other gut reactions.

Gut reactions to Michigan football win over UConn

  • J.J. makes it look so easy. The ball just never seems in jeopardy.
  • I’m still a little worried about the run game. Looking a little too tough for my liking.
  • Blake Corum still looks really good just want to see the next gear.
  • Would like to see more sacks and turnovers. That’s a must.
  • It’s hard to learn much from this cupcake schedule.
  • We start to really learn about this team next week.
  • It was good to see Cade get the ovation. He deserves it and I hope he’s ok.
  • The talent at wide receiver is crazy. Same with the secondary.
  • Michigan football looks ready for a challenge.
  • Go Blue!
