5 Questions for Michigan Football heading into UConn
Five questions for the Michigan football team as the Wolverines get set to take on UConn this Saturday in their third game of the season.
Over the past two weeks, Michigan football has been able to do whatever they want, whenever they want against Colorado State, and Hawaii, respectfully, and this weekend against UConn probably won’t be any different.
J.J. McCarthy was near perfect in his last start, the first of his career, as he dazzled and made every throw on the football field, to the tune of 11-12 passing, 229 yards, and three touchdowns.
The defense still flew all over the field last game, tackling in space, generating pressure, and forcing a lot of Hawaii punts. Michigan’s running game looked pretty good too, as Corum and Stokes both showed off their ball-carrier vision and speed.
It can’t get much better than that, right? Well, there are always things to improve upon, and the staff made sure to let the players know after the game. Here are five questions for the game against UConn leading up into Big Ten play.
Will Jim Harbaugh choose to be more run-oriented in this game?
Although I praised the running game of Blake Corum and CJ Stokes, it wasn’t like both running backs were fantastic. Both played very well, but they got limited carries, and neither broke a 40+ yard run. Corum had 88 rushing yards on eight carries and CJ Stokes had 61 yards on eight carries.
Last week, Jim Harbaugh allowed McCarthy to show off his arm talent, as JJ was slinging the ball all over the field, and Michigan football definitely threw more than they ran, at least it seemed that way. I’m not sure about the pass-run split, but it was definitely more throwing than fans are used to in the Harbaugh era.
It’s been two games now where Corum hasn’t broken the 100-yard mark. I would like to see him finally do that this weekend. I don’t care how many carries it takes him to get there (probably no more than 10 at the most to be honest), but I would like to see Michigan get that run game popping before Maryland comes to town next weekend.
JJ can still throw the ball a lot, but I would like to see more of a dominant run game this weekend.
