5 things we learned in Michigan Football’s win over Hawaii
The defense is stingy
Michigan football played well enough on defense. The Wolverines held Hawaii under 300 yards and if the first-teamers had stayed in for four quarters, it probably would have been a shutout.
There were a couple of sacks as Mike Morris and Braiden McGregor each got home. Jaylen Harrell had another good night getting after the quarterback and so far, the pass defense looks really good.
There are still some concerns about the run defense. I think it will be fine and guys like Mazi Smith, Kris Jenkins, Mike Morris, and Mason Graham will help clog up the middle, but Colorado State found some room.
Hawaii made it hard to judge anything. The Rainbow Warriors competed but they are one of the worst teams in the FBS. Michigan football could have won easily with its backups.
Still, through two games, opposing teams are completing just 50 percent of their passes and averaging 3.5 yards per pass. Hawaii had one pass play of over 20 yards and just two plays total. And if you take away the 54-yard touchdown run surrendered, the Rainbow Warriors averaged 2.09 yards per rushing attempt.
We’ll need to see how the Wolverines handle Big Ten offenses, but the defense has been impressive the first two weeks, especially in coverage.
