Michigan football beat Hawaii with ease on Saturday night and here are five things that we learned about the Wolverines in the process.

It turned out to be a surreal sort of night at the Big House as Michigan football dominated Hawaii by a score of 56-10.

First, there was a weather delay and for a short while, you wondered if the debut of J.J. McCarthy was going to have to wait a week. Mother nature seemed to be putting its nose into the QB battle.

But not for long. Eventually, the skies parted and when they did, a new era of Michigan football was ushered in by McCarthy, who was named the starting quarterback after what Jim Harbaugh called a “flawless” performance.

It was and we won’t waste any time as we get right into the five things we learned from Michigan football’s win over Hawaii.

J.J. McCarthy is Michigan football’s quarterback

This isn’t a debate anymore. Jim Harbaugh announced that McCarthy was the starting quarterback going forward after last night’s win and it was the right move.

A reporter asked if that meant beyond next week’s game against UConn and Harbaugh said, “Yeah. By merit, he’s earned that. That’s by performance, by merit.”

The words flawless weren’t hyperbole either. McCarthy hit on 11-of-12 passes for 223 yards and the only incompletion was a drop. He completed two passes of more than 40 yards (four over 30) and all were perfectly placed balls.

So were his touchdown passes to Ronnie Bell and Cornelius Johnson.

The running game was effective too and McCarthy only ran the ball once for 16 yards. However, you can see the respect defenses have to give him and finally, and finally, Michigan football has a dual threat at quarterback.

Beyond that, it has a weapon in McCarthy it hasn’t had in a long, long time.
