These are the three most absurd overreactions from Michigan’s annihilation of Colorado State in the 2022 season opener.

Michigan football was favored by a hair under four touchdowns on Saturday and comfortably covered the spread over an unrivaled opponent.

J.J. McCarthy made a statement to be the starter over Cade McNamara heading onward, while the defense lived in Colorado State’s backfield piling up seven sacks and making naysayers into believers of their refreshed pass rush.

Here are the three overreactions.

1. Cade McNamara is still afloat in the quarterback race

This is not settled yet, but after one week it is an overreaction. McNamara didn’t do much to strengthen his case for the gig. He was visibly upset in the press conference after the outing as well. How he responds when he gets in against Hawaii will tell whether he is checked out or will keep fighting for his name.

Once J.J. McCarthy came in the difference was evident. He used his legs to find the endzone and in a flash, he gained a total of 50 yards on the ground on only three carries. He also had a perfect pass percentage, even though it was only on four attempts. His mistakes will come, but for, now McCarthy is lengths ahead of McNamara in this horse race.

McNamara will have no choice but to work harder next time out if he wishes to be the starter in week three with UConn on the schedule. His odds at doing that are dipping fast, but he’s shown that he’s still one of the top options on the offense and that means that coach Harbaugh can use him in some fashion or other.
