Michigan Football: 3 takeaways from pummeling of Colorado State
By Nick Popio
Cade McNamara fumbled away a precious opportunity
The week one starter appeared a little muffled out of the gates. He hit Roman Wilson on a screen on the second procession, but Wilson did all the work to take it to the house.
Michigan football got the ball back following a Rod Moore interception and he set them up inside the red zone wanting more. McNamara almost gave it away with a pick, but the call was fortunately overturned.
He only hit 50% of his passes in the outing and will hope to spark the offensive core off the bench next weekend, although he probably won’t have to.
On the other hand that’s exactly what sophomore J.J. McCarthy did with his chance once he saw the field. It’s clear as day that McNamara cannot do the special kind of things that McCarthy can, so the choice is McCarthy for now, at least after what we saw from the two in the victory.
McCarthy gets his shot to shine against Hawaii, but the intriguing thing to see will be if McNamara can close the gap. It’s unlikely that happens, but in McNamara’s case, he has proven that he can be the guy when luck is not on his side.
However with another year under his belt for McCarthy and witnessing what we have already witnessed, McNamara is too valuable to ride the pine and can be a contributor to this club.
