A Michigan Football fan’s Week 1 Viewing Guide
Michigan football, and Wolverine fans alike, are gearing up for a Week 1 matchup against Colorado State. Yet there are plenty of storylines outside of Ann Arbor that fans might want to keep an eye on.
From old rivals to conference foes, all 12 of Michigan football’s opponents will be in action in Week 1. The majority of Big Ten teams in action this weekend will be expecting to add their first notch in the win column of the new season.
However there are two conference games in Week 1 with Penn State traveling to Purdue on Thursday night, and Illinois traveling to Bloomington, Indiana to take on the Hoosiers.
Let’s dig into the slate, starting with the least interesting games and building up to the biggest matchup of the weekend for Michigan football fans.
The least important game tied to the Michigan Wolverines is between their Week 4 opponent, the Maryland Terrapins, and the Buffalo Bulls.
In each of the last two (full) seasons, Maryland has gotten off to a hot start by blasting a couple of low-level FBS teams, or even FCS teams.
After starting 2-0 in 2019, the Terrapins became a dark horse candidate to challenge Ohio State for the Big Ten East crown, only to fall 20-17 to Temple in Week 3.
Then in 2021, the Terrapins began the season 4-0 with their signature win being a 30-24 home victory over the West Virginia Mountaineers who finished 6-7 (4-5).
I am expecting another blowout in Maryland’s favor as they dominate in this spot under Mike Locksley, but I don’t think Michigan football fans will be able to learn anything about this team while watching the demolition.
Thus, it takes the bottom spot in our viewing guide.
