Michigan Football: Who Do You Want at Quarterback?
By Paul Keren
Now with the recent news of McNamara starting week one and McCarthy starting week two, Michigan football fans have something to base their opinions on. This article is meant to be an interactive one for the fans in the community.
I will give my opinion first: I want J.J. McCarthy starting at quarterback; I believe the upside is just way too high to pass up on. This is nothing against McNamara, as he has been as good as a Michigan quarterback has been in the past ten years.
Last season, McNamara proved himself by winning the Big Ten championship and leading the Wolverines to 12 wins as well as a No. 3 overall ranking in the final AP poll. Those are things Michigan football hadn’t achieved since 1997.
McNamara has also continued to improve. Jim Harbaugh said he was one of the most improved players in fall camp just on Monday. So he’s not getting this job based on last season.
McCarthy hasn’t started a game yet for Michigan football but will make his first career start against Hawaii — something that Harbaugh announced over the weekend. Here’s what he said:
"“Coming out of camp, I just feel like we have two quarterbacks, Cade McNamara and JJ McCarthy, that we feel very confident that we can win a championship with either of those two behind center. So, we’re not ready to say who that starting quarterback is, but the decision we made is Cade McNamara will start the opener against Colorado State, and JJ McCarthy will start the second ball game against Hawaii, and then after week two we will make a decision going into week three on the starter and backup.”"
Who do you think Michigan football should start?
The head coach, who has said positive things about both quarterbacks but has also said this was a real competition, isn’t ready to end it. This will be extremely interesting to follow during the first two weeks of the season and beyond.
Now we want to hear from our fellow Wolverine fans; who do you want to start on Saturdays: J.J. McCarthy or Cade McNamara? Let us know.
