Michigan Football: Ranking each Wolverines opponent in 2022
With less than one week between now and the kickoff of the 2022 college football season, Michigan football fans have high expectations for their team.
The Wolverines won their first Big Ten championship in 17 years and made their first appearance in the College Football Playoff since its inception in 2014-2015. Michigan football will look to build off of the momentum they gained in 2021 and catapult their program further into an elite status this season.
The first step in accomplishing that goal is taking care of their opponents on the field and adequately gauging who they are up against.
The Wolverines’ schedule is a mix of early non-conference games at The Big House, some intriguing Big Ten matchups, and a few pivotal games that will ultimately make or break their season. Here is a ranking of each team Michigan’s football team will face in 2022.
12. Connecticut (Home September 17th, 2022)
Among the three non-conference games Michigan football has scheduled, Connecticut is the easiest opponent the Wolverines will welcome to the Big House. The Huskies finished near the bottom in a slew of statistical categories in 2021 including points per game (129th out of 130 teams), 265.2 total yards per game (128th out of 130), and an average point differential of 22.9. Connecticut does have some things to look forward to in 2022, as its program can only grow from here. However, Week 3 will not be one of those times as Michigan will look to bring the hammer down and make its way through September.
11. Hawaii (Home September 10th, 2022)
The Rainbow Warriors will make the 4000+ mile trek to Ann Arbor in Week 2 and face the Wolverines for the fourth time in school history. In past matchups, Michigan has gotten the upper hand and won each contest by an average margin of 36 points. This year’s team will be led by new head coach Timmy Chang who will bring a new spark to a once-prominent program. But, this game will prove to be a difficult challenge in his first season at the helm, especially on the defensive side of the ball. Look for Wolverine quarterbacks to flourish in this game, as Hawaii was one of six teams to allow over 289 passing yards per game in 2021.
