The only thing we really know about Michigan Football’s QB battle
Some insiders are saying Cade McNamara has pulled ahead in Michigan football’s QB battle, while others are saying something a little different.
The Michigan football quarterback competition has been fascinating to watch and really, it’s been going on since the end of the Orange Bowl.
Anyone thinking that Cade McNamara was going to be easy to replace hasn’t watched McNamara and ignored some of the things that made him great last season.
Most observers agree that he’s going to be the first guy under center against Colorado State. Word has it that he scored a rushing touchdown in the scrimmage last weekend and Chris Balas of The Wolverine reports that McNamara appears to have pulled ahead (subscription required).
While Balas talks about McNamara playing well in the last scrimmage, Sam Webb of The Michigan Insider reported (subscription required) that he heard J.J. McCarthy played better and that both had turnovers.
So what does it all mean for Michigan football?
What we know about the QB battle
I talked about it over the weekend in my fall camp breakdown, but the fact is, Michigan football is going to play two quarterbacks this season.
That’s especially true if Cade McNamara opens the season as the starter. McCarthy is still the future and he’s going to get reps. He’ll play in every major game just like last season.
Yes, he fumbled against Michigan State, or at least there was an exchange issue with Blake Corum. But he also threw a touchdown pass, as well as a dart against Ohio State.
I said earlier this offseason that McNamara could start the season but by the Ohio State game, McCarthy could take over. That could still be true.
Yet, it seems like McNamara has taken his game to another level too. And either way, I feel like Michigan football is in good hands. I also don’t think this ends with the season opener.
McNamara is Mr. Consistent. However, McCarthy is uber-talented but until he can learn to cut back on his mistakes and provide the steadiness of Cade, he’ll be No. 2.
At least for now.
This conversation isn’t going anywhere though and just like last season, the Wolverines will need both quarterbacks playing well to win the Big Ten championship.
