Michigan football continues to practice and with that, the quarterback battle intensifies as both quarterbacks are performing well.

247Sports Michigan Insider Sam Webb posted a “Webblog” (VIP subscription) and gave an update on how the quarterback battle between Cade McNamara and J.J. McCarthy is going.

"“McNamara has played well because he takes what the defense gives him and is moving the ball effectively. One source said while there’s still a push for him to check down less, his command otherwise has been obvious. J.J. McCarthy has had his moments too. Most encouraging has been how strong his arm is looking post rehab. Word of the 70-yard ball he threw on a dime to Roman Wilson in routes on air is testament to that.”"

What to make of Michigan football’s QB battle

What can we take from the quarterback battle update from Sam Webb?

There isn’t really a lot that we didn’t already know from this update. It is getting pretty clear that head coach Jim Harbaugh plans to let the battle continue into the season. With three relatively weak non-conference games to start the season, the two quarterbacks will have to dual it out in those games, whoever players better, gets the nod.

Although both quarterbacks played last season, McNamara was the starter and which was clear all season. Part of me thinks that is going to continue this season as well. It is extremely hard to bench or demote the player who won everything Michigan football has wanted since Harbaugh returned to Ann Arbor.

Not to mention, it is going to be pretty difficult, at least early on in the season, for either McNamara or McCarthy to look “bad” because the Wolverines’ offense is loaded. Between the loaded running back room and wide receiver room, the quarterbacks’ job will be to simply make the simple plays.

The update is nice, it is important to know how the quarterbacks are doing during fall camp, but the real factors will come when the Wolverines’ season begins.
