Gemon Green showing ball skills

There’s a lot to like about Michigan football cornerback Gemon Green. He’s 6-foot-2, 180-some pounds and he’s pretty solid in man coverage.

One issue that he’s had is playing the ball. We saw that constantly during the 2020 season and even though he deflected eight passes, he surrendered way too many big plays. He was in a position to make a play but struggled to actually do it.

Last season, he got pushed down the depth chart a little due to Daxton Hill playing mostly nickel. However, Green played well at the end of the season and saw quite a few snaps against Ohio State.

And, with the way he’s performed in practice, it wouldn’t be shocking if he opened the season in the starting lineup, even ahead of five-star freshman Will Johnson.

Obviously, we don’t see everything that happens in Michigan football practice. We see very little actually. Practices are closed to the media. But the team releases photos and videos and on Friday, the Michigan football account tweeted that Green had two interceptions during practice.

That’s a really good sign for a couple of reasons.

One, it’s just good to see Green building his confidence. But it’s also good to see him taking that step as a veteran. Vincent Gray got better as his career wore on and so did Josh Ross. Could you imagine a Josh Ross type of season from Green at cornerback?

Well, imagine it, because that’s what we’re going to get. Green is going to be really solid — solid enough that he’ll be among the top four corners all season long.
