Michigan Football’s Junior Colson is set for a monster season
A fan on Twitter asked which Michigan football player would breakout to have an All-American season in 2022 and Junior Colson immediately comes to mind.
Michigan football lost some star players from its defense. There’s no debating that. But new stars are going to emerge and one of them is going to be Junior Colson.
Signed in the 2021 recruiting class, Colson was a top-100 talent but at that time, I argued he was vastly underrated. He’s a freakish athlete, who notched double-digit sacks his last season in high school, while also returning a kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown.
That tells you the kind of versatility he has.
And this season, I can’t wait for the Michigan staff to unleash him on opposing offenses. Last season, he made an immediate impact and had 60 tackles, 0.5 TFL, 0.5 sacks, a fumble recovery, and two passes defended.
This year though, he’s going to be much more impactful and one reason is that I expect him to be on the field for just about every single snap.
Junior Colson will be a difference maker
Daxton Hill was the X-factor for the defense last season and this year, Colson will have to be that guy. He’s got a unique skill set and his speed/athleticism is going to be needed in coverage, as well as run defense.
I’m also interested to see if he’s used more in blitz packages. He excelled with that in high school and if the Wolverines are looking for ways to get pressure, Colson might be an option, albeit not all the time because he’s going to be needed for pass coverage too.
Don’t get me wrong, I a huge fan of Mike Morris and think he takes a big leap this year. Mazi Smith too. I also think DJ Turner will be in the mix and each of those guys has a good shot of earning First-Team All-Big Ten honors.
It’s not going to be easy though and I still believe that Colson is going to have the best season of any Michigan football defender in 2022.
I said when he signed I felt he was going to be a first-round pick someday and nothing that happened in his freshman season made me doubt that prediction.
Colson is a stud and this season, he will prove it.
So it won’t be that surprising to see him get some sort of All-American honors by the end of the season. He did as a freshman and this year, he’s poised for a true breakout campaign.
