Michigan Football: 5 offensive players flying under the radar
As we head into the 2022 Michigan football season, here are five Wolverines on the offensive side of the ball who are flying under the radar.
Believe it or not, Michigan football fans, we are less than two months away from the first game of the 2022 season.
The offseason hasn’t been all that great. Jim Harbaugh flirted with the NFL and recruiting, well, it hasn’t gone as expected. But winning cures all right?
And Michigan football is expected to win a lot of games this fall. We’ll be releasing our updated game-by-game predictions soon for the 2022 season, plus a whole lot more on the Wolverines.
For now, we start with some players flying under the radar, and here are five on offense that meet that description.
QB Cade McNamara
It’s hard to imagine the starting quarterback flying under the radar, but if there is a returning starter in the country more disrespected than McNamara, I struggle to see it.
Of course, the reason for that has more to do with J.J. McCarthy than Cade, who was third-team All-Big Ten last season and led Michigan football to a 12-2 record and a Big Ten championship.
The two quarterbacks are going to battle it out this fall, now that McCarthy is healthy, and many are hoping/expecting McCarthy to prevail.
And while McCarthy is certainly going to play more than last season (he is the future) McNamara isn’t going to be easy to unseat. I’ve said all along I believe that he’ll start Week 1. After that, it just depends on how things go.
I know McCarthy has improved but McNamara hasn’t been resting on his laurels and he’s not giving up this job without a fight. The former Notre Dame commitment, which Alabama was also high on, was a four-star QB coming out of high school and some believe he can play in the NFL.
This season will tell the tale but McNamara has already achieved more than anyone expected him to when he arrived at Michigan and it’s my opinion that U-M has two really good QBs in 2022.
At times, it will be a headache but it will also be a luxury and after some of the poor-quarterbacking seasons such as 2017 and 2020, it’s a good problem to have.
