Michigan Football: Is good news on the way for Wolverines?
Friday could prove to be a big day for Michigan football recruiting as multiple targets are set to announce their decisions.
We have talked about how the month of July could be a key month for Michigan football on the recruiting trail as a number of key targets are expected to announce their commitments.
One top target that is set to announce on Friday, in a bit of a surprise move, is five-star receiver Jalen Brown, who talked about taking things to signing day earlier.
Miami seems to be trending in the right direction but LSU is also right there. Michigan football has been on the outside looking in. The Wolverines did get an official visit but I would be surprised if U-M was the choice for the five-star wideout.
Still, good news could be on the way.
For starters, four-star offensive lineman Amir Herring is set to commit on Thursday and it looks like he will be announcing for the Wolverines. He’s a top-5 in-state prospect according to the 247 sports composite rankings for the 2023 class, so that’s a good get.
The bigger question is what will happen Friday?
Enow Etta and Collins Acheampong are set to announce
We have been wondering when Enow Etta and Collins Acheampong would announce their decisions and it appears as though that could happen on Friday.
Acheampong is making his decision known on Friday and he’ll do it on the 247 sports Youtube Page. However, the other news is that Enow Etta could be deciding Friday too.
Etta, another top EDGE target for Michigan football in 2023, tweeted, “Friday” earlier on Wednesday which seemed to indicate a commitment could come on Friday.
It seems like Michigan and Michigan State are the top two contenders for Etta, but if his decision is connected to Acheampong’s (they visited Michigan on the same weekend) that’s a good thing for the Wolverines.
Of course, Etta later deleted the tweet, so who knows if a commitment is coming Friday. However, Michigan is the only school in the mix for both prospects and the Wolverines have a history of sending edge rushers to the NFL under Jim Harbaugh, including Aidan Hutchinson, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2022 NFL draft.
Hutchinson is one of four first-round picks at the position under Harbaugh and the number would have been five if David Ojabo didn’t get hurt prior to the draft. He still went in the second round though.
Etta and Acheampong were on campus when Hutchinson and Ojabo got their Big Ten title rings and both say that academics are important.
That’s a positive for the Wolverines and while it’s nothing more than a guess, if both players announce on Friday, it should be good news for Michigan football.
Trying to read the tea leaves is difficult and with time to go before these decisions are announced, you never know what to expect. Yet, the Wolverines are still the leader in both recruitments according to the On3 prediction machine, so there is reason for optimism.
But until the commitments are made, I’d keep my fingers crossed because each of these targets is vital to Michigan’s 2023 recruiting efforts.
