The maize and blue took home their 10th tournament championship in Big Ten history by battling through the gauntlet of the treacherous Big Ten over Memorial day weekend.

Michigan baseball ran through the top four seeds like a buzzsaw en route to earning an automatic trip to the NCAA’s. This was the Wolverines’ first time winning the Big Ten title since they did it in 2015.

It brought back some magical memories from the run they made in the NCAA tournament just three years ago. They will learn their fate on Memorial day as to where and whom they will be playing next weekend.

Here are the three takeaways from the Big Ten baseball tournament championship.

1. The bats erupted with 45 runs in the four wins

Michigan’s bats came alive this past weekend. They made the ping sound ring loud and often throughout Omaha. The most impressive showings came with 15 runs against top-seeded Maryland,13 in the rematch victory over Iowa, and 10 to bring home the bacon by topping Rutgers in the winner-take-all championship.

Jimmy Obertop bombed away three home runs in four days. Clark Elliott added some as well, along with bringing home the moniker of being the most outstanding player of the entire tournament. His prospects moving forward to the pros are arguably as sky-high as anyone in the Big Ten conference.

Michigan baseball needed to win the whole enchilada to secure its spot in the NCAA regionals and they did just that by playing their best ball at the right time.

Erik Bakich proved once again that he is one of the nation’s most underappreciated managers and is living up to the brash words he echoed when he was first hired at Michigan in 2012.
