The top-ranked edge rusher in the 2024 recruiting class was offered by Michigan football recently and he’s high on the Wolverines.

While some Michigan football fans are worried about the recruiting efforts of the Wolverines, especially in the 2023 class, things might not be as bad as they seem.

Michigan football doesn’t have any commitments in the 2024 class yet, but the Wolverines are becoming a player in a number of major recruitments and one that U-M got involved with this spring was Colin Simmons, the top-ranked edge rusher in the entire class according to the On3 consensus rankings.

Simmons is out of Duncanville, Texas and the 6-foot-3, 215-pounder is already blowing up on the recruiting trail, and in addition to being rated as the best EDGE, he’s also 13th overall and is the top-ranked player in the state of Texas.

That makes it a little surprising to see Oklahoma leading according to the On3.com prediction machine but it’s still early in the process and Texas A&M, as well as Texas, are firmly in the mix, along with a number of other powerhouses.

‘I’ve been waiting on this one’

But one school you can count among that group according to Simmons’ own words is Michigan.

Simmons talked to Brice Marich of the Michigan Insider and it’s clear that the top-ranked edge rusher in 2024 was impressed with what Aidan Hutchinson and David Ojabo did last season.

Not only did Simmons say he was “waiting on Michigan’s offer” but he also told Marich that he thinks Michigan can help him reach the NFL just like Hutch: “I think they can get me to the league, especially with me and Aidan (Hutchinson) playing the same position.”

Hutchinson and Ojabo are just the latest early-round picks for Michigan at edge rusher as Kwity Paye, Taco Charlton, and Rashan Gary all went in the first round, while Chase Winovich and Josh Uche were also day-two picks.

Michigan offered May 12 and Simmons was also recently offered by Oregon, USC, and Florida State. He already held offers from a number of SEC schools including Alabama.

Obviously, landing his commitment is going to take a lot of work. But his interest is also an example of how Michigan’s recent success is starting to translate to the recruiting trail.
