Michigan Football starting to build momentum with official visits
Michigan football needed to build some momentum on the recruiting trail and it has set itself up really well with some key official visits in June.
It’s been more than six weeks since Michigan football landed a commitment on the recruiting trail and it doesn’t take any sort of in-depth analysis to say the Wolverines could use a shot in the arm.
However, the foundation for a really strong recruiting class is still being built. It’s understandable that Michigan football fans are upset by the lack of progress and a class that currently ranks 17th overall according to the On3.com team rankings with six pledges and just two four-stars.
Yet, Michigan also does really well in the summer months. Its big visit weekend is set for June 16-18 and already, the Wolverines have 10 official visitors scheduled.
Michigan football’s impressive visit list
A few are players already committed to Michigan, however, the Wolverines will also host a number of four-star recruits including top-50 edge rusher Jason Moore, top-100 offensive lineman Cayden Green and also top-100 athlete Jaxon Howard.
Michigan football just made the final four for Howard (99th overall via On3 consensus), who is a 6-foot-4, 240-pound athlete listed as a tight end but is someone Michigan is recruiting as an EDGE. Minnesota, Miami, and LSU are also in the mix and the Gophers lead the way in the On3.com prediction machine right now.
But Michigan has a great history of taking these kinds of athletes and turning them into NFL edge rushers, just as it did with David Ojabo, so there’s a lot to sell, and defensive line coach Mike Elston has been doing a great job on the trail and I expect that visit weekend to pay dividends.
Moore is going to be a tougher pull. Elston obviously is familiar with him from his time at Notre Dame but the Irish are still the heavy favorite with a 96-percent chance to win his commitment according to the On3.com prediction machine.
Still, getting Moore to Michigan on an official visit is important. That’s the first step in swaying him and at least the Wolverines will get to put their best foot forward in their effort to land the 6-foot-6, 255-pound edge rusher ranked 39th overall in 2023 according to the On3 consensus.
Enow Etta (133rd overall via On3 consensus), an edge rusher from Texas, is also taking on an official visit that same weekend, while Malachi Coleman, a top-200 edge rusher from Nebraska, will visit later in June. Collins Acheampong is another edge rusher that will be in Ann Arbor this June and he’s one of 10 uncommitted consensus four-star prospects that will do so.
The total number of 2023 recruits taking official visits in June is now 17 and that number should continue to grow in the coming weeks.
